We know, at least, that those who died haven't been lost to oblivion... but if they've lost the opportunity to return to life, that's still a fate to be avoided.

I'm inclined to believe there's some truth to it. But I'll be unsurprised if there turns out to be a number of "twists" sprung on us at the last minute. That would be very demon-like.
